CHAPTER FIVE: CUCKOOS CALL AT NIGHT (Page 79-101)

Chapter Summary:

The airman was thirsty and desperately needed some water. Tien Pao didn’t wanted to leave them alone as he was scared he will lose the airman and his pig. They held a mini conference without words. Finally, Tien Pao agreed and went towards his last cave which they were almost drowned. Tien Pao filled a helmet full of water but during his short journey, he saw some Japanese in the mountains. Tien Pao was scared and he stayed in the cave for a while. Then, he was delighted to see the airman and Glory-of-the-Republic are still there.

The trio were starting to move slowly until they met a group of people. Tien Pao thought they were the Japanese but it turned out that they were the Chinese guerrilla. The guerrilla took the airman safely to China and Tien Pao to their camp. They tricked a Japanese by using Tien Pao’s pig and after that they went for sleep.

When he woke up, an old lady who was part of the guerrilla, gave him two bowls of rice. Tien Pao was very grateful to her. After that, the leader of the guerrilla told their plan for the day where they would act as if they were working for the Japanese.

After a long day of work, the guerrilla group went to Tien Pao’s so called mother’s house. They ate and also took rest. Yin, Tien Pao’s so called mother, helped Tien Pao and Glory-of-the-Republic bath. Tien Pao was also informed that after a few more hours, Tien Pao will leave the Japanese territory and join his family in Hengyang.
