CHAPTER FOUR: THE RIVER CLIFF (Page 58-78)

Chapter Summary:

Water was pouring down the cave heavily. This made Tien Pao wake up. He was still tired but he knew that if he didn’t move, the Japanese might track them back. So, Tien Pao and Glory-of-the-Republic started to climb the cliff in the early morning. In a matter of time, they reached the peak.

Tien Pao was looking around and saw a road full of trucks and horses which had Japanese soldiers in them. Tien Pao also looked high and saw a plane. It was not to aim him but to destroy the troop of Japanese soldiers who were heading towards Hengyang. The plane released its bullets and did great damage to the Japanese. Most of the trucks were destroyed and the horses were wounded. Though, the airman did a good job, he couldn’t keep the plane in his control as it crashed on the road.

The wounded airman was trying to escape but the Japanese were also approaching from behind. Tien Pao shouted and alerted to the airman to move from the top of the cliff. This diverted the attention of the soldiers as some of them were also now approaching Tien Pao. The airman took this moment to escape by swimming underwater.

Tien Pao knew he had to move or else the Japanese would kill him. He went back to his caves but it wasn’t safe enough. While he was tracking down the cliff, he founded the airmen. It was a big relief for Tien Pao to still find the airman alive.

They communicated for a while with sign language. The airman gave a chocolate to Tien Pao which made him happy. Tien Pao alerted him that they have to move but the airman showed him his wound which meant he couldn’t travel. Tien Pao made a small bed out of leaves and allowed the airman to take some rest.
