Chapter Summary:
The hungry Tien Pao and Glory-of-the-republic were
struggling to climb the mountains. They took a break and saw a group of boys
and girl. They walked and looked like old people. They had knives alongside
them to cut their food, grass! The Japanese didn’t leave any food for the
Chinese so now, the kids had to live eating grass. Another small kid started to
eat mud!
Tien Pao realized, if there is a scarce of food, then people
might hunt down Glory-of-the-Republic. This made him tensed. He wanted to run
and hide somewhere but he didn’t had the energy to do so. Suddenly,
Glory-of-the-Republic found a hole which helped it and Tien Pao to hide and
rest for a while. Tien Pao also heard the beautiful sound of the river which he
thought would be a useful guide for him at the night.
When Tien Pao woke up, they started to travel again. He
walked for a long time until he found that his pig is lost! He was frustrated
and running everywhere and he discovered a rice paddy field. He went there and
felt a little bit safe to know that he is not alone as the paddy meant people
lived around here. Suddenly, Glory-of-the-Republic came running towards Tien
Pao. He was delighted and also knew that he had to go back to the mountains or
the Japanese would catch him.
Tien Pao was searching for another hole. He finally found
one and when he was entering it, he heard the sound of a cuckoo. He was
desperate to go towards it. But, he saw his pig lying on the floor. Tien Pao
thought he was dead but in fact Glory-of-the-Republic was eating grass. Soon,
Tien Pao also tasted some grass and felt a big relief as the sign of hunger was
removed from his stomach. Then, they went to sleep in the hole which covered by
a big, thick wall of leaves.
